Get your Tax File Number (TFN)

The ATO says you need a TFN to work and to avoid higher withholding rates. Apply online soon after you arrive and keep the confirmation.

Working holiday maker tax rates (official)

If your employer is registered as a WHM employer, the ATO says they withhold 15 percent tax on the first 45,000 AUD you earn (2020 to 2021 and later income years). Higher rates apply above that threshold. Check the ATO WHM tax rates for updates.

Income statements and tax returns

At the end of the income year or when you finish work, you may need to lodge a tax return. Use your income statement or payment summary to complete it.

Superannuation and leaving Australia

Employers pay superannuation for eligible workers. The ATO WHM guidance explains how to access your super when you leave Australia, including the departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP).
