Home Affairs says you can do any kind of work on a WHV and study up to 4 months. You can travel to and from Australia while the visa is valid.

6 month work limitation and exceptions

  • Usually you can only work for the same employer for 6 months.
  • The 6 months is based on elapsed time, not hours. It includes full time, part time, casual, shift, and voluntary work.
  • You can work more than 6 months without permission if you work in different locations for the same employer and each location does not exceed 6 months.
  • You can work more than 6 months without permission in plant and animal cultivation anywhere in Australia.
  • You can work more than 6 months without permission in certain industries in northern Australia (see the official list).
  • Otherwise you need to request permission.

Meaning of one employer (official)

Home Affairs defines the employer as the business or organization you work for directly. Being hired through an agency does not let you stay in the same position and location beyond 6 months.

Pay and records

Fair Work sets the national minimum wage and award rates. Keep your payslips and bank statements, and if you are paid piece rates keep the written piece rate agreement. Home Affairs lists these documents as evidence for specified work.
