Apply online outside Australia (official)
First 417 and 462 applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount from outside Australia. If your passport requires a pre-application ballot (China, India, Vietnam for subclass 462), complete that step first.
Documents Home Affairs expects
- Identity: passport biodata page and birth certificate showing both parents, or alternative identity documents if you cannot provide a birth certificate.
- Proof of funds: usually AUD 5,000 plus onward travel.
- Subclass 462 extras: education evidence, Functional English evidence, and a letter of support for some passports.
- Health or police checks if requested.
Health and character checks
Home Affairs may require health examinations or police certificates depending on your travel history and time spent in different countries. Follow the official health and character guidance when requested.
After grant: entry date and passport updates
Your visa grant letter shows the first entry date. Your 12 month stay starts when you first enter Australia. If you get a new passport after the grant, update Home Affairs before you travel.
Community notes
- Community Q and A confirms the first entry date on the grant letter is enforced. Plan flights around that date.
